Chagu Chagu Umakko Festival (チャグチャグ馬コ)
Last Saturday, Iwate Prefecture held a special event--the Chagu Chagu Umakko Festival, which takes place every year on the second Saturday of June. It is one of the most impressive and colorful festivals in the region. This celebration honors the profound bond between humans and horses, with a rich and long history.
To show appreciation for the horses that help farmers during the busy rice-planting season, locals give the animals a day off and take them to a nearby shrine to pray for their health. Horses play an important role in daily life in Iwate, not only in farming but also as companions. Over time, this simple act of gratitude evolved into a grand and joyful celebration. Today, the festival is recognized as a national intangible folk cultural asset. Even the sound of the horses' bells has been selected as one of "100 Soundscapes of Japan."
The main highlight of the festival is a magnificent parade of about 100 horses, each adorned with colorful ribbons, flowers, and shiny harnesses. They wear hundreds of small bells that jingle as they walk, creating the cheerful "chagu-chagu" sound from which the festival gets its name. The procession starts at Onikoshi Sozen Shrine in Takizawa City and travels about 14 kilometers to Morioka Hachimangu Shrine. Along the route, the sound of the bells echoes through the air as people line the streets to watch and cheer.
As you walk along the procession route, you'll see beautiful countryside landscapes--lush rice fields, rolling hills, and traditional houses. People from nearby towns come out to watch, wave, and smile, many dressed in traditional clothing. Overall, the event feels like a celebration of Iwate's culture and community spirit. Farmers, performers, children, and tourists all join in to make the day vibrant and festive. You can feel the pride people take in preserving this tradition.
What makes the Chagu Chagu Umakko Festival truly memorable is how it brings the past and present together. It offers a glimpse into a world where people and animals live and work in harmony and where tradition is still deeply valued. Watching the elegantly decorated horses, hearing the gentle sound of bells ringing across the rice fields, and seeing the joy on everyone's faces all combine to create a peaceful, heartwarming experience.
This is one of the must-see festivals for anyone studying at Iwate University. The Chagu Chagu Umakko Festival is not just a fun event; it's a meaningful celebration of history, nature, and community. It's an experience you will remember for a long time.
